According to some experts, teak wood grown on plantations can be
more prone to split and splinter, and is more susceptible to
water damage than teak grown in the wilds. However, the recent
introduction of kiln drying in the wood manufacturing process
has served to stabilize and enhance plantation-grown teak to
make it more durable and reliable. If you purchase
plantation-grown teak wood products made from kiln dried wood,
you need not be concerned about getting an interior product.

"What Kinds of Products Are Manufactured from Teak Wood?"

Many different furniture and furniture-related products are made
from teak: you can purchase teak dining room furniture, lounge
chairs and office chairs made out of teak. You can also purchase
teak office furniture such as desks and shelves, even bar stands
and bar stools -- I have even seen teak shower seats advertised
recently on some websites. If you want to go all out, you can
even purchase teak wood doors made for your entrance ways, as
well as window frames and roofing beams.

"Is It Safe to Purchase Teak from Overseas?"

Yes, it is perfectly safe to purchase teak wood from overseas
sources. All materials entering the US will, of course, need to
be properly inspected by customs officials and cleared by them
before you can receive delivery of your items. But there are
many, many reputable dealers located overseas -- and if you are
able to order your teak furniture directly from them, you may be
able to realize a significant savings. As with making any other
type of overseas purchases, investigate sources and dealers
thoroughly before purchasing your teak furniture, and wherever
possible deal with businesses that maintain a national or
industry certification.
