Anime Moves To Live Big Screen Action

It has recently been announced that many popular anime shows will be brought to the big screen as live action features. While there have been live action films based on anime before, they have not always been successful. However, there may soon be a slew of films based on anime that could become very acclaimed, much in the way that numerous comic book properties have become successful feature films. Here are three features that are soon to be developed.

Cowboy Bebop: Cowboy Bebop tells the story of three bounty hunters who operate, primarily, on Mars. Unlike other science fiction stories, this one seems more grounded in reality, with the only real sci-fi element being that it takes place in space. This series has been highly popular for years and is now being developed at 20th Century Fox, along with the original anime studio that created it. Keanu Reeves, so far to the chagrin of fans, has been cast in the lead role of Spike Spiegel. It remains to be seen how the movie will fare.

Death Note: Death Note originated as a manga, and it is one of the most popular manga in the world. Death Note tells the story of Light, a young man who stumbles upon a Death Note, a notebook left on Earth by a death god. The Death Note kills whoever's name is written in it. Light uses it to try to rid the world of crime, only to have his father, a police chief, after him. Also on his trail is a hidden, genius detective known only as L. The books are highly acclaimed for their detective elements. There has already been a very successful live action film released in Japan, which has spawned a sequel and a spin-off, but there is expected to be an Americanized version which changes the character of Light to a criminologist.

Akira: Akira is considered to be the manga and anime that first helped to popularize the medium in America. It tells the story of a biker gang in a post World War Three Neo-Tokyo after the runt of their group is injured and begins exhibiting extreme psychokinetic powers. Leonardo DiCaprio is producing, and potentially starring in the film, which will also be an Americanization, which many fans are not pleased about. It remains to be seen whether or not the film will continue as an Americanization, but many fans are already saying that it is a white wash of the Asian characters.
