Buying a VW Camper - what to check in the interior

When you're checking out the interior of VW Campers,the normal rules apply, look at a range of Camper models - you'll get a much better idea, not only of what configurations are available, but also what you want.

First off - what kind of conversion is it?

Is it a good quality VW camper conversion, or a DIY job,with windows added to a van? VW had apartnership with Westfalia in Germany who fitted large numbers of interiors into the VW bus - in a range of designs. In the UK there were Devon (which had a roof which was hinged at the front), there are models which had a roof hinged at the sidesuch as Dormobile, Holdsworth and Danbury (who generally did their early VW Camper conversions from panel vans.

Try the pop up top

If the camper has a pop top, then get the owner to demonstrate putting it up - look for stiffness in the actual mechanism and check what state the canvas is in. Both can be replaced, but does the price allow for this and do you or customised, look even closer - it could all just be surface gloss. Some owners enjoy doing this and don't do the stuff that's really!

Take a general look round. has it been cleaned? Messy and dirty? Somewhere in-between? Is the interior original? What fittings and appliances are included? What's been replaced? What materials and finish have been used? How good are the fittings and finishes? Do you like the layout?

Look inside cupboards to check for signs of any leaks - they may have long-standing water leaks through the side vent for example. Check for leaks round the edge of the roof vents. Not a big job to rectify, but damage to the roof lining by incoming water, can be extensive.

Check the seats - is the foam worn and flat? Foam doesn't always look bad - but, you'll know once you've slept on it whether or not it needs replacing! What state are the covers in? If the rear seat covers are worn or torn, these can be recovered loosely or done professionally.

Ask the owner how the fridge is powered - is it gas,or leisure battery and hook upand check if it works. Beware if the fridge is not in use! Also ask about the cooker and any other appliances - how old are they? Get the seller to demonstrate them working.
