Equestrian Saddle Buying Don'ts

It is vital to make the most of the budget you do have so here is a little guide on what not to do when buying your equestrian saddle.

1. Do not buy a saddle because it looks good. It is easy to make a saddle that has all the pretty bits on but has a junkyard build. In my wife's words, fur hat and no drawers.

2. Buying a saddle because it is advertised in a magazine with some celebrity name attached. The celebrity gets paid for his or her name and has nothing at all to do with build quality or design.

3.Buying a saddle when you know very little about them. It does not take long to gain sufficient knowledge to be able to judge good from bad or cheap from nasty.

4.Do not buy cheap saddles as they will only cost you twice, once to buy it and twice when you have to replace it next year. A quality saddle can last a lifetime or even more a cheap saddle won't.

5. Do not buy into the brand name circuit, although it can be a signal for quality a lot of smaller quality saddle makers have been bought up by big companies who want to sell volume not quality. This is hard to judge but by asking around at your club and anywhere that deals with horses will generally give you a better steer than brand name alone.

6. If you have several horses you may well have to buy a couple of saddles if your horses are built differently. Although you can use the same saddle on several horses it should fit them properly. You would not expect to wear your sisters clothes if she is 6' tall and you are 5'1".

7. Do not disregard used saddles. As previously said a saddle can last a lifetime with proper care so be aware of what is available and you may pick up a bargain. Buying a secondhand equestrian saddle may allow you to get a much better quality one than buying new.

8. Finally do not be one of those people who have a tack room of badly bought saddles, buy the best quality you can afford and take care of it. If you do decide to buy another saddle in the future you will probably be able to sell this one and give someone else a chance at a quality third hand saddle.
