A baby shower is one of the nicest ways for new parents to acquire the items that they need to have a smooth start to parenthood. The guests might choose to pool together to buy a gift certificate for something extravagant like a day for two at the spa or a fancy dinner - but be sure to include babysitting arrangements. Another useful idea is to sit down with the dad and the mom's loved ones, and organize a dry-erase calendar with concrete offers of help where it is likely to be needed.

These can include cleaning house while mom and baby are in the hospital, taking the older child to school in the morning so mom can sneak in a little extra sleep for the first week, or scheduling a weekend for going to the warehouse club store or making a big grocery run. After being sure to get down all the names and phone numbers of the helpers, present the finished calendar to mom at the shower. It may be that both mom and the baby in fact don't need anything new. You might decide to mark the upcoming birth with a straightforward party with friends and oved ones.

You could ask the guests to buy baby items, smaller items like diapers and clothing, and then bring them to donate to a women's charity or shelter. Another idea for a second-baby shower is to hold a "freezer" party, with guests bringing food that can go in the freezer or else be easily stored. This will be of great help to the mom as she gets closer to her due date and during the first week or so after the birth. Obviously, you'll want to check with mom to see if she has adequate room in her freezer for al the goodies, as well as select a party date close to her delivery date.

Lastly, it is acceptable to hold a full, as-if-it-were-the-first-baby shower in the case of a "caboose" baby - one who, as the name implies, is being born several years after the last child. Many times, in situations like this, the parents will no longer have those "big" items anymore, or they might not meet current safety standards.

Even if the baby shower is small or minor in terms of gift-giving, the most important thing to remember is that it is an opportunity to show the mom-to-be your love for her and her little one.
