We have all seen traditional Hawaiian flower leis on TV shows and in the movies but very few people actually know very much about them. For instance, what do they symbolize and before the arrival of the first tourists, where were they given out in traditional Hawaiian society. What does it mean when someone receives one?

The fact is that they are given out far more frequently then that were in the past. You see today everyone at a luau will get one to wear around the party, as they munch on roast pig and drink tasty tropical fruit cocktails. However; in traditional Hawaiian society of the past Hawaiian flower leis were reserved only for dignitaries and special guests.

1779 Captain Cook First Sees Hawaiian Flower Leis

The very first written note of Hawaiian leis was made by Capitan Cook when he first visited the Hawaiian islands back in 1779. However; researchers will tell you that the tradition of giving these types of flower necklaces actually dates back at least several centuries prior to this date and originated from early Polynesia.

Other Peoples of the Planet Who Wear Flower Adornments

Even so, the concept of wearing flowers in strings isn't necessarily confined to these types of Pacific island societies. You see, the people of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam all also have their own variations of flower bracelets and body adornments. Through it all though it is the colorful red and blue Hawaiian flower leis that really seems to stick in peoples minds. They sure do look nice!
