Joseph and Richard Lamb: Architectural Wonders In Stained and Colored Glass

The brothers Joseph and Richard Lamb came to New York City from England and in 1857 founded the J. and R. Lamb Studios. The firm became widely known as one that could produce architectural wonders in stained and colored glass. Their renown in ecclesiastical installations preceded that of later firms who eventually did similar work, such as Tiffany Studios, and Lamb designs incorporating opalescent glass are particularly prized.

This was the company who created the mosaics for Cornell University’s Sage Chapel, the stained glass windows in the U.S. Marine Corps chapels at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, and many other commissioned works still in place today in schools, churches and synagogues across America.

Thoreau said, “It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.” Allegory in a work of art is special in that two messages can be communicated simultaneously. An image can make both a literal and a symbolic statement to the observer. Over the years untold numbers of people have viewed allegorical window scenes created by the J. and R. Lamb Studios and found meaning that, for them, lay beyond the solid physical beauty of the glass. Midst the artistry of glowing colors, carefully placed and illuminated from beyond, many would have been seeing very much more than a visual image. Peace, pardon, paradise. Or simply, hope.
