McCoy Cookie Jars

By: Karen Bradsell

McCoy cookie jars are a lot of collectors' favorite jars. McCoy
pottery was manufactured in Roseville, Ohio. In 1920, Nelson
McCoy and J.W. McCoy opened the Nelson McCoy Sanitary &
Stoneware Company in Roseville, Ohio.

The business started making art pottery after 1926. A change of
status occurred in 1933 and it became the Nelson McCoy Pottery
Company. Pieces marked McCoy were made by Nelson McCoy Pottery
Company. They started manufacturing cookie jars from about 1940
until December 1990. Unfortunately, in 1990, a great American
pottery company closed its door.

There is a lot of confusion about McCoy markings because of the
time period between 1911-1925 when Nelson McCoy and George Brush
joined companies. You can refer to the Brush article in my
Squidoo lenses for more information.

McCoy cookie jars have delighted generations of American
housewives. They were whimsical, adorable, comical and
affordable kitchenware. Every American kitchen needed at least
one cookie jar. Luckily for lots of collectors, their current
values have skyrocketed from their original prices. For example,
The Squirrel, made in 1961 now lists for over $3,000.00 dollars
in today's secondary market. The Cauliflower Mammy, considered
to be one of the first figural jars produced, now lists for over
$2,000.00.

Supply and demand have lots to do with the escalating
values. Few of the modern jars come close to the quality and
desirability of McCoy cookie jars. It was a sad day in American
pottery history, when they closed their doors for good!!
