Real Vintage versus Vintage Reproductions

"I'd like this dress in a size XXL and in red instead of black." These are the words of a customer that visited my shop recently. I was trying to figure out how my customer thought I would be able to find this particular item in a size XXL and in red instead of black when the dress I have listed is vintage. Then it dawned on me. In fashion magazines and in advertising on TV and the internet you see tons of dresses, skirts, pants, shoes and coats being described as "vintage style. No wonder consumers are confused and frustrated when we can't fill their orders.

Believe me, if I could time travel I would go right into the Lana Lobell catalog warehouse (the great Jonathan Logan designed dresses for them back in the day) and pick up 10 of every item in every size available, but alas that is just not possible. So for now my customers will have to choose what I am able to find on my travels around the globe to find them the best real vintage items there are.

So, I'm going to describe the difference between REAL vintage and REPRODUCTION current vintage, and hopefully this will clarify things, and make it easier to shop.

Real vintage clothing and accessories are the items you see in Ruby Lane's vintage clothing and accessory shops. Reproduction current vintage are clothing and accessories that are being shown in the current fashion magazines such as Vogue, Teen Vogue, etc. They are remakes of the popular styles that were made back in the day. If you look on eBay and sites other than Ruby Lane you'll see the reproduction category where items are made from fabrics of today and reproduction patterns are for sale. The folks that sell reproductions provide mass produced copies of the same dress in the same fabric in many size ranges.

There is room in the world for both REAL vintage and "reproduction current vintage." Their are several benefits to purchasing REAL vintage fashions as opposed to purchasing REPRODUCTION current vintage fashions, such as, possessing a one-of-a-kind item that is not mass-produced, wearing clothing made from high-end fabrics that are no longer used in production due to their high cost, a real sense of wearing a piece of history, and of course, you're contributing to the greening of the planet by wearing these lovely REAL vintage fashions, instead of sending them to a landfill, where they do not belong.
