Thimble Collecting

Since all known cultures have used thimbles, collecting is a worldwide hobby. It may be your main collection or an outgrowth of collecting something else such as vintage sewing items or pewter. You may want to collect thimbles for their historical value, their monetary value, their design or as souvenirs of places you visit. There is no right or wrong way to collect.

One of the greatest advantages of collecting thimbles is often overlooked. They don’t take up much space! 48 thimbles can easily fit on a small wall rack and 100 thimbles would easily fit in your top dresser drawer. You can’t say that about antique cars.

Another advantage of thimble collecting is the reasonable price of all but the rarest thimbles. You are bound to find items you can afford in your area of interest.

Since thimbles are so diverse and there are so many available, it is a good idea to determine what does interest you and narrow the field before starting to collect. There are thimbles for everyone. Whatever your interest: history, precious metals, travel, movies or advertising, the 50 states or the reign of Elizabeth the First, there are thimbles out there for you.

Thimbles also offer a nice way to help a child start a collection. Tourist destinations you have visited together or cartoon characters might interest a child.

Once you’ve collected thimbles for a while, you may want to join a collector’s club or society. If you like to meet fellow collectors in person, there are many local clubs. If you’d rather interact with collectors on-line, there are a variety of websites for thimble collectors.

Joining a club or society is a good way to get your questions answered. You can benefit from the expertise of other collectors and share your knowledge with them. Other collectors can often suggest places where you can find items for your collection. It makes a find even more exciting if y ou can share it with someone who is really interested.

Some societies have videos to share on a variety of subjects. You can research the best way to display your collection or just fantasize about wonderful thimbles you could never afford.

By all means, do share your collection so everyone can enjoy it. Whether you fill a huge wall rack or a small glass dome, thimbles decorate a room and make great conversation pieces.
