Tin Can Opener Design History

The creation of the tin can was a revolution in cuisine preservation and it was in fact a English man Peter Durand who first patented it in 1810. In 1795 the French army had offered a 12,000 franc reward for a way of preserving food. This was needed for the French army as food was in shortage. A confectioner, Nicolas Appert, was the man who won the French army reward when he experimented in preserving food by sterilisation.

In the year 1813 John Hall and Bryan Dorkin had opened the first ever industrial canning plant in Britain but their equipment could only assembly six cans per hour! Things didn't get better on this number until 1846 when Henry Evans invented a canning machine that could produce sixty cans in an hour - a large improvement!

These original tins were so substantial that they had to be smashed open, which of course made things quite difficult but in 1850s the first can opener was invented by Ezra Warner of Connecticut, and the US Army used it during the Civil War. In 1866 J. Osterhoudt designed the first key opened cans like you find on sardine cans.

The can opener that we know and love and tend to use in our kitchens today is the William Lyman opener which was patented in 1870 - this can opener rolls and cuts around the top of the can and the first electric version was made in 1931. Thinking about it we have gone ages with no big improvements on the can opener, and they are difficult to use for left-handed persons or those with limited hand movement due to old age.

We have been used to the old style can opener for too long now that one could be forgiven for thinking that there would never be an another way. But it has finally it's here!

Modern can openers are a marvel. They are an electric can opener system, which offers a one touch action. You don't have to use brute strength, swear when the ring pulls off or end up slicing your finger. It produces no sharp edges and is quick, easy to use . As well as all that (yes, it does get even better) it can be used for any kind of tin can - if it has a ring pull on it It is hygienic, being easy to clean and it and even looks great, being of ergonomic design - it won't take over the whole of your utensil drawer!

At last Peter Durand can rest in peace knowing that justice has been done for his revolutionary original can opener!
