HISTORY'S ROLE ON JEWELRY - By: Sharon Lemell An Ever Increasing Popularity of Antiques and Vintage Collectibles are significantly growing each day. And what more pleasurable way to get an education on our own history and culture then to acquire a Beautiful Antique Piece of Jewelry, an Antique Doll or Toy and learn about it and it’s beginnings. This is equally true for Antiques and Collectibles from around the world.  The Art Nouveau Jewelry Period itself, 1885 to 1905, had an important influence on Jewellery Designers and Artists such as Alphonse Muncha gave another form of expression that was unlimited in design with styles that included Beautiful Woman, flowing lines and a show of a love for nature with Flower Motifs! The Style of the Arts and Crafts Jewelry Era, 1905 to 1935 (which spanned throughout the time period of the Art Nouveau, Edwardian and Art Deco Period) was an Artistic Design Movement. Famous Designers and Architects such as Gustav Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright made their mark during this time period. The Beauty of Jewelry Design was to purposely look hand-made rather than machine made and incorporated Natural Stones, Simple Functional Straight lines, Angular forms plus the Influences of Styles from all Eras. The Roaring 1920's Art Deco Jewelry Era represented a liberated time! Women finally won the right to vote and expressed themselves more freely outwardly! Sleek Angular Designs, Short Hairstyles, Looser Dresses and ones with Slinky Fringes along with Jewelry Accessories such as Long Czechoslovakian Earrings, Glass and Enamel Pins, Antique Celluloid Brooches, Vintage Bakelite Brooches and Flapper Beaded Necklaces became the Fashion Craze! When King Tut’s Treasures were discovered in 1922, so much Jewelry was designed around an Egyptian theme. The Art Deco period lasted until the mid to later 1930's.  By the late 1930's throughout the Fabulous 1940's the style now known as Retro Modern was very much in evidence. Retro Modern is not a period style but a definite recognizable style of jewelry design. Large Vermeil Pins and Pendants with Flower Motifs tied with Bows plus influences from the Art Deco Period are great examples of this time period. Much of Retro Modern Jewelry is Gold over Sterling Silver. Understanding how History played an important role and influenced Jewelry Design dating from the Victorian Era into the 1940's. Antique and Vintage Jewelry is a time capsule reflecting our past and teaching us and our future generations.
