I am especially fond of vases. They are not only beautiful objects of art displayed on a shelf, but they also enhance the beauty of any flowers placed in them. Some people won't use their vases. They are afraid of water stains or find them difficult to clean. Perhaps the vase already have stains. No need to fear, your vases can be safely cleaned and used if you do so with care.

First, what to do about vases that already have an ugly residue? You might be able to salvage it. Starting with the simplest solution first, fill the vase with white vinegar and let it sit overnight. Wash it out. Better? If not you may need to soak it again. Effervescent denture tablets are also effective for removing stains and debris from inside a vessel. The fizzing action can help lift debris trapped in the bottom. Calgon is another product that has been successfully used to remove mineral deposits as it softens the water. For extra tough stains, many people have had success with a product like CLR or Lime Away. If these measures fail, it might not be mineral deposits. Your glass may be permanently etched and there is nothing you can do short of having the piece professionally tumbled or polished.

What ever method you try, the most important thing to know about cleaning your vases is to never, ever stick your hand down into vase. Doing so might make it shatter and cause serious injury. The very best thing you can do is avoid these deposits in the first place! For starters, change the water in your vases every few days, especially if you live in an area with hard water. Not only will this help prevent mineral deposits, but your flowers will last longer also. Before filling your vase, rub a band of Vaseline around the fill line. As the water evaporates, the minerals won't be able to adhere to your vase. If the water goes below the line, it's time to change the water. If your vase is large enough, carefully place a smaller vase or a narrow glass down inside. Use the interior vessel to hold the water for your bouquet. And finally, consider the beauty of opaque glass. Milk glass vases are a beautiful way to display your flowers. Water left to evaporate can still leave deposits on the inside of the glass, but they won't show.

Vases, while beautiful to display, were meant to be used. So go out to the garden for some cuttings and display them in a beautiful vase. It will add a touch beauty and elegance to your home.
