Puppy Socialization Tips and Tricks - By: Richard Magnanti

If you are a dog owner, you probably get embarrased when your dog leaps all over people as they come into your house. The first thing that you have to do is to socialize them not only to other dogs, but humans as well. As an owner of two extremely large breed dogs, I have used the following tips to help better my puppy's manners.

We didnt go into the mall mind you, but rather right outside the front entrance. Now, pretty much everybody loves brand new puppies and there were a lot of people that would approach me and ask if they could pet our dogs. We would only stay for about an hour, 3 days a week. We took them to the mall for about a month. By doing this, both of our dogs got very used to the human feel as well as just being around new people. The whole experience worked good.

To get them friendly with other dogs we did a couple things. Once a week, we would take them to our local doggie daycare for a whole day. They were with other puppies so they could play and just be dogs for the day. By the time that we picked them up and came home, they were very tired. I'm sure you know the adage, a tired dog is a good dog. During the weekends, we headed out to the neighborhood dog park. This worked out great. There were always a lot of grown-up dogs at the park to teach my puppies the appropriate way to behave. We continue take them there to this day.

So, start your puppy's socialization at once (approximately 10 weeks old). You will have a much more balanced dog later on in its life.

If you are like most people who have dogs, you most likely hate the fact that once a guest comes into your house, your dog jumps all over them. To help steer clear of this issue, you must get them familiar with humans and other dogs by socializing them. I have two pretty good sized dogs, I use the following tip to improve my dogs manners around other dogs and people as well.
