How to Clean and Care for Wicker Furniture
- By: Jacklina
Wicker furniture can give you many years of use if properly cleaned and cared for. It can withstand certain degree of moisture stress without any serious yield or quality loss. Wonderfully durable and beautifully able to withstand the ravages of weather and stress.
Naturally, indoor wicker furniture requires considerably less maintenance than its outdoor counterpart, but it'll still need the occasional dusting. To clean the wicker use a moderately stiff brush and use small brushes to get into the creases.
If conditions are too dry, the wicker can dry out and become brittle. It will help if you wipe the furniture occasionally with a cloth dampened with water.
Weekly or at least twice monthly dusting will help to keep wicker looking good and fairly dust-free. You will need to clean it regularly with the brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner. Use a damp sponge and a little bit of mild detergent mixed with water to remove the stain or spill. Gently dry the surface of your freshly cleaned wicker furniture with a soft towel.
Periodical care is great, but once a year it is best to do a major cleaning with soapy water of your wicker furniture. Than rins with the garden hose.
If mildew and mold to appear, remove them using a water and mild bleach cleaning solution. Dry the furniture as well as possible,as wet or damp wicker will take on a new shape very easily. Once the furniture is completely dry, you can apply a coat of varnish to help protect the furniture.
If wear and tear is becoming apparent on your wicker, you can apply paint by brush or spray. If the wicker furniture is painted, then it may be a good idea to strip the wicker furniture for refinishing work. Apply the stripper with a brush, liberally coating the piece. Any stripper liquid can be used to soften the wicker. Let it sit overnight and than scrub gently with a small scrub brush.
Now you can paint the piece of furniture you wanted to repaint. Finally, apply a thin coat of liquid furniture wax to it to give it a good, glossy finish.
