African Art - A Unifying Expression - By: Anthony Riali

African art has an origin long before history was recorded.

Think of the Egyptian Pharaohs and their fixation with tombs and head gear. How they used color to bring forth a message or inner beliefs. The southern tribes of Africa also played a essential role in art, depicting their everyday life on rock canvases.

When looking at the visual aspect of African Art, one thinks that the same genre is carried through the entire continent. This is not factual as there are lots of facets in different communities which lends not only to a singularity or distinctiveness but also to an undetected unity. So one would be forgiven for thinking that all African Art is the same.

The art has numerous emphasis, one of which is the human figure and is the most popular subject matter for both well-known artists in addition to those who wish to be one. The art can present lots of types of figures such as a chief or a dancer or a drummer. Humans can also be presented in the form of the living or the dead as well as a fusion with god-like and animal-like figures.

Color plays a significant role on garments, textiles and homes. Artist's or owners would use color to build a 3D spectrum. Lots of homes have three dimensional patterns and plays with the idea of interaction from the viewer. To experience the artwork in it's totality one should walk around the dwelling. Same with 3D sculptures - they must be viewed from all angles to actually appreciate the fine art.

Another interesting fact is how they use their art in a ceremonial context as well as in the performance art. Numerous masks and costumes are designed to be worn by the dancer or actor. These performers then take on the spirit of the mask or costume of the African Art and acts out it's life or message, giving the audience an entertaining and at times fear-provoking view of the inner works of this "spirit".

African Art is a lovely expression of the unifying qualities of long ago. Africa is home to some of the most imaginative, beautiful and even fear provoking art that can be found anywhere in the world.
