Bringing a new puppy home is an exciting new adventure which brings with it a lot of responsibility for bringing the puppy up with proper training. The training should start at day one, when the owner enjoys the cute little puppy, but should keep in mind that everything that he does with the puppy is reinforcing behavior that will continue when the puppy turns into an adult. A successful puppy training must be consistent throughout the puppy’s life so that its allowed behaviors when with you and with the presence of a visitor are the same. If the behavior would be an embarrassment or could cause harm or annoyance to the person entering the home the owner must not allow it with himself, otherwise the dog will be confused as to what behavior is appropriate to do with people.

Stop That Puppy Biting:

One common issue that has to be stopped through training is biting. It is true that puppies tend to bite all the time especially when they are exploring the world, but the unfortunate part is that people get the brunt out of this attention. The puppy should never be hit or slapped when training it to stop biting since this can lead to the puppy thinking that the owner is playing with it, roughhousing like dogs will do with each other. If you want a puppy to stop biting permanently, try not to play violent games with the puppy like tug of war, wrestling and chase. Although these activities are fun for the dog and owner, they encourage aggressive behavior which is not acceptable for the dog to exhibit with all humans that come into the home.

One way to keep your puppy from biting relentlessly is by crying a sharp and loud “Ouch!” whenever the puppy attempts to bite you and then remove your eye contact with and turn your back to the puppy. This is the same method that dogs use with each other, letting the other dog know that it’s hurt and they are not going to play that way. Using a negative reinforcement method will successfully train the puppy to stop biting as he will get the idea that biting will not get him any attention from you at all. When the puppy calms down and does not try to bite, the owner should give it attention and praise so that the proper behavior is reinforced.

If the puppy bites down on the hand, the owner should place one finger inside the mouth under the puppy's tongue and hold onto the bottom of the jaw with the thumb for about ten seconds. Remember that the pressure should only be firm enough that the puppy cannot get away for the right amount of time only. The puppy will not be able to bite down and it will provide the negative reinforcement that the behavior is not acceptable to use.

There is no better way to enjoy a day at home than to have a cute puppy running around the house and doing tricks which are the fruits of your responsible training.
