Mother’s Day has a truly touching past and the day has been exceptionally revered since its inception. The first official declaration of Mother’s Day was made in the U.S. in the year 1914.

The day is celebrated in the honor of mums in every family. The event is celebrated in all the countries but the dates vary depending on the nation’s culture and events. Although, modern day Mother’s day campaigns started in US in the year 1907, the tradition of celebrating motherhood was prevalent in different continents. Some of these traditions marks its beginning centuries back. In UK, since several centuries, they have been celebrating the Mothering Sunday. However, the day is marked with the religious ceremony of visiting one’s Mother Church. And the day was more attached to the concept of Virgin Mary and her sacrifices. The event was celebrated on the fourth Sunday of March. Later on they adopted the same for Mother’s Day celebration.

In the olden days, mother’s day was celebrated by giving holiday to all sorts of workers so that they can visit their mothers. On the day a family was supposed to spend the day entertaining the mother in the family. Thus, the tradition of giving gifts and flowers to our moms on Mother’s day was born. On that day, moms were given holiday from their conventional homely chores. The rest of the family members prepared the food or arranged a party to make the occasion memorable.

The most ancient records about Mother’s Day celebration were found in Greece. The Greeks celebrated a festival in the name of Cybele who is believed to be the mother of all Gods. The culture was passed on to the Romans. Records say that Mother’s Day was celebrated in Ancient Rome in the month of March.

In every country, Mother’s Day is celebrated with great honor and they had wonderfully integrated the occasion with diverse religious beliefs. In Norway, Mother’s day falls on the second Sunday of February. For Middle East Countries, the day falls on March 21st. However, most of the western countries celebrate the day in May. In Kenya mothers day falls in June, for India it is in August, and in Russia it is November. In fact, if you take a worldwide survey, you will find that mother’s day is celebrated throughout the year in some or the other country. This emphasis, the comprehensive nature of this special day and it also highlights the importance of a mother that cannot be replaced by anything else in this world.

Whichever country we belong to, or whichever day we celebrate the motherhood; we should always try to make the occasion special for our mothers. And the sole purpose of the day is to let our mothers know that they are so important to us.
