Collect Stamps: Another Market Has Opened Up For You
- By: David L Stargel
Buying postage stamps online may be a great idea for
entrepreneurs who want the convenience of being able to print
their own postage in their homes or places of business.
It's an idea which has, in fact, been endorsed by none
other than the United States Postal Service, which has licensed
several online postage stamp vendors.
But what if your interest in buying postage stamps online lies
not in having stamps for your personal use, but in having stamps
to add to your stamp collection? Is the Internet really a good
place to search for collectible stamps, and how exactly should
you go about doing so?
The reality is that finding collectible stamps online is not
much different than purchasing them through traditional
auctions. Many people offer collectible stamps through eBay and
other online auctions sites, but when you are buying from
private individuals and relying on photographs for your
impression of the condition of a particular stamp, you should
check the seller's feedback. And see what the seller is
willing to offer in the way of a guarantee that the stamp is as
advertised.
If a particular stamp is one that you really want, but you know
it is going to fetch a big price, negotiate with the seller and
see if you can place your money in escrow until you have had a
chance to examine the stamp personally if yours is the winning
bid. If that is not acceptable to the seller, ask if he or she
is willing to refund your money should the stamp be less than
you expected.
Anytime you are buying a collectible stamp online, you will be
better off it the seller is a member of a Philatelic Traders
Society and you can see the PTS shield somewhere on his or her
webpage. Like all Internet sales, the sales of collectible
stamps online depend on the trustworthiness of both buyers and
seller, but you should never assume that the person on the other
end of the deal has your best interests at heart.
Even if you decide to forgo the sometimes bargain basement
prices available on eBay and purchase your collectible stamps
from dealer websites, take the necessary steps to protect your
purchase, because in many cases the law can do little to help
you, especially if you are making a purchase from a seller in a
foreign country. By limiting your buying to members of
philatelic trader societies like the American Stamp
Dealers Association, or the American Philatelic Society, you
will have the opportunity to file a complaint if you are
dissatisfied with the purchase you make.
It only makes sense, when you are buying collectible stamps
online, to keep thorough records of your communications with the
sellers. That way, you will have some hard documentation on
which to base your formal complaint should something go wrong.
While for millions of stamp collectors, buying and selling
stamps is an honorable aspect of a beloved hobby, the price of a
rare stamp in excellent condition can sometimes cloud a
person’s judgment!
