There was a time when Hollywood avoided comic book materials like the plague. With mediocre renditions of classic characters like the Punisher, Captain America, and even the Fantastic Four - the last two being so bad that they ended up as direct-to-video issues - Hollywood has gotten the idea that comic materials do not order a following that is large enough to guarantee a hit.

In 2000, a comic book-adapted flick changed such a perception.

Bryan Singer got comic book's primary franchise, the X-Men, and made an excellent flick out of the same. The result is a trilogy that raked in billions of dollars in profit.

The X-Men flicks are largely considered as the movies that broke open the gateways of Hollywood for highly victorious superhero flicks that came after - Spider-Man, Blade, Daredevil, the two Fantastic Four movies, and even the remake of Batman and the return of Superman to the wide screen.

The X-Men trilogy, nevertheless, has completed its course.

However, fans should not be anxious as Marvel Comics and 20th Century Fox are scheduling a sequence of movies centering on the genesis of the transformed creatures we have grown to like.

First of these flicks is X-Men Origins: Wolverine, planned for a May 1, 2009 showing. Hugh Jackman will reprise his character as the titular persona, though, the film will be set some 17 years earlier than the events of the first X-men movie.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine conveys the narrative of Logan's unearthing of his mutant powers, his addition to the Weapon X program, his transactions with William Stryker, and his rift with the said institution.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine will feature a slew of new mutants direct from the comic book series, like the motor mouth killer, Dead Pool - portrayed by the highly-recognized Ryan Reynolds - and the furious Cajun, Gambit - played by Taylor Kitsch. Sabretooth, surely, will perform a crucial role in the film, being a central personality in the Wolverine saga.

One of the things to see in the movie is the revelation that the Weapon X code doesn't stand for the letter X, but, it refers to the number ten,with Wolverine being the tenth government venture created for mass destruction. The finale of X-Men Origins will position Wolverine against the new version of the program, Weapon XI.
