A Dictionary of Color Combinations is a beautifully restored edition of the legendary color reference originally created by renowned Japanese artist and designer Sanzo Wada (1883–1967).
First published in the early 1930s, Wada's groundbreaking work was one of Japan's earliest systematic studies of color harmony. At a time when the concept of color coordination was still in its infancy, he developed hundreds of sophisticated palettes inspired by art, fashion, architecture, nature, and everyday life. His work laid the foundation for modern color theory in Japan and continues to inspire designers around the world.
This compact edition features 348 carefully curated color combinations from the Taisho and early Showa periods—an era celebrated for its elegant fusion of Japanese tradition and modern design. Remarkably, these palettes remain timeless and highly relevant for contemporary creative work.
Features:
- 348 classic Japanese color combinations
- CMYK values and color chips for every palette
- Ideal for graphic designers, illustrators, fashion designers, interior designers, artists, architects, and collectors
- An essential reference for anyone interested in Japanese aesthetics, vintage design, and color theory
More than a color guide, this book is a fascinating glimpse into the history of Japanese design and a timeless source of inspiration for today's creative professionals.
