Please check availability for upgrade class “C class” before asking (shown in the screenshot), or provide your confirmation + last name, so I can check it for you online or through ExpertFlyer. Sometimes upgrades can be confirmed instantly; otherwise you will be put on the waitlist, and should or not be cleared before departure.
Systemwide upgrades are not available on Basic Economy tickets bought on or after May 18, 2026. Systemwide upgrades can be used:
- On American: To upgrade most Business fares and most Economy or Premium Economy fares to the next class of service* anywhere we fly.
- On British Airways: To upgrade most Business fares to First, from Premium Economy to Business, or from Economy to Premium Economy when flying transatlantic.
- For one-way travel for up to 3 flight segments on American Airlines marketed and operated flights or British Airways marketed and operated flights or British Airways operated flights marketed by American. You must have at least one American marketed flight in your trip to be eligible.
On American, Business tickets will upgrade to First. For Economy tickets, it depends on the aircraft and destination:
- In a 3-cabin aircraft, you can upgrade from Economy or Premium Economy to Business.
- In a 2-cabin aircraft, you can upgrade from Economy to First for domestic flights, or from Economy to Business for short-haul international flights.
