Antique Underwood Standard Portable 4-Bank Typewriter with Glass Keys and Original Case
Beautiful early Underwood Standard Portable 4-Bank manual typewriter, dating to approximately the late 1920s/early 1930s.
Underwood introduced its four-bank portable design in 1926, giving users a conventional four-row keyboard in a relatively compact machine. This example carries patent markings through 1927 and retains many of the wonderful design features associated with early Underwood portables.
The front of the machine retains its original gold lettering reading:
“UNDERWOOD STANDARD PORTABLE TYPEWRITER – STANDARD FOUR BANK KEYBOARD”
It also retains the classic UNDERWOOD name and crest on the rear paper table.
One of the most attractive features is the original four-row glass-topped keyboard, with white paper legends beneath the glass and nickel/chrome-colored key rings. The combination of black enamel, glass keys, exposed mechanical components and gold lettering gives this machine a wonderful early industrial appearance.
CONDITION:Good original antique condition with age-appropriate wear and patina.Substantially complete and retains its original keyboard, ribbon spool covers, carriage, platen, typebars, controls and carrying-case base.
The original black finish shows scratches, scuffs, dust, oxidation and other signs of age and use. The original gold Underwood lettering and crest remain visible but show some fading and wear, particularly in the UNDERWOOD lettering.
