VINTAGE STERLING SILVER HAYWARD EOD BADGE & FOUR U.S. ARMY MEDALS — VALOR “V,” ASSAULT-LANDING ARROWHEAD, WWII VICTORY & GOOD CONDUCT

This is an outstanding five-piece American military insignia and medal display, spanning the World War II and Cold War eras. The highlight is an early-style, sterling-silver U.S. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) badge with an old-fashioned pin-back construction and a reverse maker’s mark that appears to read HAYWARD. Accompanying it are four full-size U.S. Army medals with several special ribbon devices that make this an especially interesting grouping for the serious militaria collector.

THE HIGHLIGHT: EARLY HAYWARD STERLING-SILVER EOD BADGE

The EOD badge, often nicknamed the “Crab,” represents one of the military’s most demanding specialties. EOD technicians identify, disarm, and dispose of explosives and dangerous ordnance, frequently working where the margin for error is almost nonexistent. The badge’s shield represents protection, its bomb the explosive threat, the lightning flashes the destructive force EOD specialists must control, and the laurel wreath the skill, achievement, and sacrifice of those who serve.

The U.S. Army authorized the original EOD Specialist and Supervisor badges on July 31, 1957. Early badges were produced in solid sterling silver, including pin-back examples associated with the late 1950s and 1960s. Later production included silver-filled and base-metal versions, although sterling examples could also be privately purchased afterward. This badge has the basic EOD design, without the additional central star identifying the Senior grade.

The faint hallmark appears to be HAYWARD, associated with Walter E. Hayward Jewelry Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts. Hayward-marked sterling EOD badges are a harder-to-find maker variation valued by collectors of early military insignia. The badge is offered as sterling silver as identified by the seller; please examine the close-up hallmark photograph carefully.

FOUR HISTORIC U.S. ARMY MEDALS

  1. ARMY COMMENDATION MEDAL WITH BRONZE “V” DEVICE. The handsome green-and-white ribbon carries the important combat-valor “V.” This is the Army Commendation Medal—not the Army Achievement Medal. The “V” designates a decoration awarded for acts of heroism involving conflict with an armed enemy. The bronze, six-sided pendant displays the American eagle and shield.

  2. WORLD WAR II VICTORY MEDAL. This classic medal recognizes qualifying U.S. military service between December 7, 1941, and December 31, 1946. Its distinctive rainbow-edged ribbon and figure of Liberation are among the most recognizable designs in American military medal history.

  3. ARMED FORCES EXPEDITIONARY MEDAL WITH ARROWHEAD DEVICE. The colorful ribbon carries a bronze arrowhead, signifying qualifying participation in an assault landing—including an amphibious landing—or certain airborne assault operations. This is a particularly interesting device, not merely an ordinary campaign star. The medal itself recognizes qualifying U.S. military expeditionary operations beginning in 1958.

  4. ARMY GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL WITH REPEAT-AWARD LOOP CLASP. The distinctive red-and-white suspension ribbon carries a metal clasp with loops denoting additional qualifying awards of the Army Good Conduct Medal. The bronze pendant reads “EFFICIENCY • HONOR • FIDELITY” around an American eagle. The loop clasp is a worthwhile historical detail and should not be overlooked.

This attractive assembly combines an early sterling EOD qualification badge with medals representing valor, wartime service, expeditionary assault participation, and sustained good conduct. The pieces show age and handling consistent with vintage militaria. Please examine all photographs for condition, ribbon wear, attachments, markings, and construction.

All five pieces pictured are included. No recipient attribution or claim that the items were originally awarded to one individual is made without supporting documentation.

A compelling display for collectors of U.S. Army decorations, EOD insignia, World War II and Vietnam-era history, or historic military badges. Thank you for looking!
