Laura Knight was a British figurative painter and printmaker whose long career encompassed portraits, landscapes, theatre, ballet, circus subjects, and scenes of contemporary life. Trained at Nottingham School of Art, she developed a realist approach informed in part by plein-air painting. Performers became an important strand of her work, and her sustained interest in theatre, ballet, and circus life produced both public-performance and backstage subjects.
Allez Oop! depicts a group of circus acrobats balancing on the back of a moving horse within a brightly illuminated arena. Several performers cluster together while a female acrobat at the right extends her arms and raises one leg as she moves away from the group. The horse forms a broad horizontal base beneath the figures, while concentrated theatrical lighting separates the performers from the surrounding audience and darker arena interior.
