Loïs Mailou Jones was an American painter, designer and educator whose career encompassed the Harlem Renaissance and later developments in twentieth-century African American art. Trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, she joined Howard University's faculty in 1930 and subsequently studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Her work ranged from textile design and landscapes to portraits and compositions informed by African and Haitian art. Travel and study in France, Haiti and Africa contributed to successive developments in her imagery, palette and approach to design.
Africa is an oil on canvas board dated 1935. The composition presents three closely grouped figures with elongated, highly simplified facial features, jewelry and boldly patterned garments, framed by broad green leaves. The work belongs to Jones's early engagement with African visual traditions and predates her celebrated Les Fétiches of 1938. The Johnson Collection and Swann Galleries both document the work, its title and 1935 date.
