Loïs Mailou Jones was an American painter, designer and educator whose career encompassed the Harlem Renaissance and later developments in twentieth-century African American art. Trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, she joined Howard University's faculty in 1930 and subsequently studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Her work ranged from textile design and landscapes to portraits and compositions informed by African and Haitian art. Travel and study in France, Haiti and Africa contributed to successive developments in her imagery, palette and approach to design.
Figures Dancing presents a group of dark silhouetted dancers across a densely colored composition incorporating masks, animals and patterned forms. Jones organizes the figures through extended arms and bent limbs, setting their movements against saturated passages of green, orange, pink, blue and ochre. The combination of dancing figures with African-derived imagery reflects the artist's sustained study of African art and visual culture.
