Loïs Mailou Jones was an American painter, designer, and educator whose career extended from the Harlem Renaissance through the late twentieth century. Trained in Boston, New York, and Paris, she joined the faculty of Howard University in 1930 and developed a practice encompassing painting, watercolor, textile design, and collage. Her work engaged French landscape traditions, African American history, Haitian culture, and the visual arts of Africa. Travel and sustained study in France, Haiti, and African countries contributed to successive developments in her color, design, and subject matter.
Voodoo is documented as an oil-on-canvas work incorporating applied gold leaf. The supplied image is constructed from interlocking areas of yellow, blue, pink, brown, black, and white, within which simplified human faces and figures are integrated. Jones's Haitian period included extensive engagement with Vodou-derived graphic forms and ceremonial imagery.
