Great Westernwas a four masted, iron-strapped, oak hulled, side-wheel paddle steamer. The sails were used to provide auxiliary propulsion and in rough seas to keepthe ship on an even keel. This helped ensure that both paddle wheels remainedin the water. She was the largeststeamship for one year, until the British Queenwent into service. She was fitted with two side-lever steamengines from the firm of Maudslay, Sons &Field, producing 750 indicated horsepowerbetween them.

Shewas the model by which later luxury steamers were designed. Note the “main saloon” and luxury cabins onthe cut-out section. The engine room isalso exposed, showing the boilers, red to the right, and pistons driving thegreat paddlewheels.
