These vintage Lenox china pieces were commissioned by the family of Dr. Robert Iverson Hicks, a prominent physician and surgeon during the Civil War, who moved to Poplar Springs Manor Estate in Casanova, Fauquier County, Virginia after the war. He was born in 1831 and died in 1920.
The set consists of 12 covered boullion bowls, 12 teacups and saucers, 4 demitasse cups and saucers and 2 extra demitasse cups without saucers. The white porcelain pieces feature hand-painted details, 24K gold gilding, a glossy finish, and were manufactured in the United States between 1906 and 1930. It is a family heirloom suitable for formal occasions, making it a valuable addition to any collection. The provenance of this set was confirmed to us by the very reputable auctioneer at the auction where we purchased it more than 30 years ago.
Monograms sometimes represented a married couple, but this set was purchased after Dr. Hicks' wife, Nancy Fitzhugh Randolph Hicks passed away, so research led me to the likelihood that the set was commissioned by or for a subsequent generation. We believe the monogram is oHc, and there was a grandson, Oliver Cartmell Hicks, who married in 1919, and my research suggests that this set may have been a wedding present for the couple. That is actually unknown, but his initials are the only OCH I have found thus far in the Hicks family. This family history adds a unique and historic touch to the provenance of this set.
We purchased this Lenox set at an estate auction in Fauquier County, Virginia more than 30 years ago, and it has been stored away ever since.
