Outstanding exampleof a large-format Ewbanks Topaz Cinchona Cordial bottle in rich amber glass.Boldly embossed panels reading “EWBANKS TOPAZ CINCHONA CORDIAL” with crisp,well-defined lettering and excellent overall eye appeal. The company formed early 1880s in Spartanburg, SC. Newspaper ads began around 1886. This bottle appears to be a very early edition as evidenced by its hand blown crudeness. Later editions have stronger embossing and much less hand finish of the lip.
This is ahand-blown, pre-1900 medicine/bitters bottle with applied lip and classic rectangularform. The larger 9.5" size places it well above the more commonlyencountered smaller examples, giving it strong shelf presence and desirabilityamong collectors.
Recovered as a dugbottle, it retains honest burial character without tumbling or modernpolishing. The glass shows natural patina and light interior haze consistentwith age, while remaining clean and highly displayable.
Cinchona cordialswere quinine-based medicinal tonics used in the 19th century, making thesebottles collectible across both medicine and bitters/tonic categories.
A scarce anddesirable Southern medicine bottle, particularly in this larger format withstrong embossing and color. Pieces of this size and presence are increasinglydifficult to find and make a standout addition to any advanced bottlecollection.
