Vintage U.S. Army Air Cavalry Flight Jacket – Vietnam 1971–1972 Theater-Style Embroidery – Hue/Phu Bai – Pegasus & Satan Snake
A remarkable piece of military aviation memorabilia featuring elaborate Vietnam War theater-style embroidery commemorating the U.S. Army Air Cavalry and the 1971–1972 period in Hue/Phu Bai, Vietnam.
This vintage military flyer's jacket features a large, embroidered winged Pegasus on the back, a distinctive "Satan Snake" cobra design on the chest, and original-style military insignia.
The jacket appears consistent with a U.S. Army lightweight flyer's jacket, possibly the MIL-J-43923 family. The original contract/manufacturing label is missing, so its exact manufacture date and model have not been conclusively established.
Historical Significance & Theater EmbroideryPegasus – Air Cavalry – Hue/Phu Bai, Vietnam 71–72
The back of the jacket features a striking winged Pegasus surrounded by colorful "AIR CAVALRY" lettering, with "HUE-PHU BAI VIETNAM 71-72" embroidered beneath.
The Pegasus has distinctive pink-toned accents in its mane, hooves, and wings.
One intriguing possible interpretation of these colors is a connection to the Vietnam War's famous "Pink Team" helicopter operations.
During the war, Air Cavalry units utilized coordinated helicopter teams consisting of low-flying observation helicopters, often OH-6A Cayuse "Loaches," supported by AH-1G Cobra attack helicopters flying protective cover.
These hunter-killer formations became known as Pink Teams, combining the designations of White Teams (scout helicopters) and Red Teams (gunships).
The pink embroidery may be a symbolic reference to this aviation tradition, although its precise meaning has not been documented.
Satan Snake – Custom Chest Embroidery
The right chest features an unusual, colorful design reading "SATAN SNAKE," with a cobra breathing fire and a stylized lightning bolt.
The cobra imagery is particularly interesting because the AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter was a prominent part of U.S. Army aviation operations during the Vietnam War.
"Satan Snake" may represent a personal nickname, crew identity, aircraft reference, or unit-associated insignia. Its exact origin and any connection to a specific wartime callsign have not been independently verified.
The combination of this distinctive chest embroidery and the large Pegasus back design gives the jacket considerable visual appeal and historical interest.
