Vintage Hand-Carved Tagua Nut (Vegetable Ivory) Head – Man in Native Chief-style Feathered Headdress, Americana Folk Art
This is a charming, well-detailed carved nut head from my family’s collection of... old stuff. Age is unknown, but it was purchased in the United States in the 1950s and was already considered old at that time. The carver is unknown, but it is believed to be an American folk-art piece. This is a nice piece for collectors of folk art, nut and vegetable ivory carvings, “face” carvings and nut (“vegetable ivory”). The natural brown outer skin forms the feathered headdress, and the pale interior forms the face
Origin: Carver and specific place of origin are unknown. Because it was purchased in the US, it is likely American-made, but cannot be and age-appropriate,the patina on the face is honey-toned and aged.
Origin: Carver and place of manufacture are unknown. Because it was purchased in the US, we believe it is American-made, but I cannot confirm this.
Provenance:Family history: purchased in the United States in the 1950s and kept in same family since. There is no receipt or paperwork.
