Authentic Mid-Century West German Stoneware Beer Stein

Elevate your display cabinet, historical collection, or home bar with this exceptional piece of traditional German craftsmanship. Manufactured during the height of the mid-century export boom by the legendary pottery house Simon Peter Gerz in the Westerwald region of West Germany, this 0.5-Liter lidded stein perfectly marries rich folklore with fascinating geopolitical history. This specific stein has been meticulously preserved within a private family collection for decades. It carries a unique historical connection: it was originally acquired around the historic fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989/1990 by a traveler visiting Germany during reunification. Because it proudly bears the official "W. Germany" factory mark, it serves as a tangible, conversation-starting relic from the final years of the Cold War era. The body of the stein features a vibrant, high-relief molded castle brickwork pattern framing two beautifully detailed scrollwork panels. The panels feature a centuries-old German soldier song detailing a carpe diem philosophy—reminding us to enjoy the present moment despite the unpredictable hands of fate:

• Right Panel: "Das Leben ist ein Würfelspiel, wir würfeln alle Tage,"

• Left Panel: "dem einen gibt das Schicksal viel, dem andern Müh' und Plage."

• English Translation: "Life is a game of dice, we roll them every day; to one fate gives good fortune, to another only trouble and toil." This piece has been beautifully preserved. • Stoneware: Vibrant cobalt blue, deep cream, and rich earthy glazes remain bright and glossy. No chips, cracks, or hairline fractures.

• Hardware: The ornate pewter dome lid is fully intact, sits perfectly flush, and is securely anchored to the handle.

• Base Markings: Incised with the iconic Gerz factory triangle/jug logo, mold/series number "1", and stamped in blue ink: "ORIGINAL GERZ" and "W. GERMANY".

• Era: Cold War Era (Circa 1960–1980)

• Dimensions: Approx. 7" tall (to top of lid) x 4.5" wide (including handle profile).

• Capacity: 0.5-Liter (Approx. 16 oz standard size).
