Vu Cao Dam Bouddha Buddha Vietnamese Modernist Buddhist Painting For Sale

Vu Cao Dam was a Vietnamese-born artist who studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine in Hanoi, where he trained in sculpture, drawing, and painting. He subsequently established his career in France, developing an artistic language that combined Vietnamese and broader Asian visual traditions with European modernist painting. His work encompasses sculpture, silk painting, and oils, frequently featuring elongated figures, delicate contours, and harmonious color relationships. His later paintings reflect an increasing interest in expressive color and the influence of artists such as Marc Chagall.

Bouddha presents a seated Buddha surrounded by three female figures in a composition dominated by luminous greens, turquoise blues, and soft yellow tones. The central figure wears a flowing yellow robe and sits above a cluster of pale lotus blossoms, with stylized foliage extending through the background. The three women occupy the left side of the painting, their elongated forms and softly inclined heads contrasting with the Buddha's upright posture. Loose contours, layered colors, and gently blended forms give the composition its distinctive modernist character. The painting draws upon the Buddhist account of Mara's daughters approaching the Buddha, interpreting the traditional subject through Vu Cao Dam's expressive figurative style.
