Beat the Winter Blues with an Indoor Flower Garden in Antique Glass Bottles

By: Jen Temcio

Winter is a time of year where many people in cold climates are feeling the affects of lack of sunlight and spending too much time indoors. It is called many things from the Winter Blues to Seasonal Affective Disorder. No matter what you call it, it can cause serious and dramatic changes in mental health. When you are feeling the depressive consequences of the winter season, it is imperative to find legitimate ways to get through the emotionally difficult times. Antique glass jars, vases, bottles and more are truly wonderful, often colorful and ornate. They can be beautifully showcased with a gorgeous and cheerful Indoor Flower Garden.

Research has continually confirmed that color has real and powerful psychological effect on mood. I have compiled a brief list of the positive and emotionally enriching qualities of each color. You may use this when composing a color palette for your containers, flowers and artwork.

Red - action, courage, vitality

Orange - personal power, self-esteem, creativity

Yellow - concentration, optimism, has a dramatic
effect of energizing you with happiness

Green - growth, harmony, safety, renewal,
alleviates depression and anxiety

Blue - Calming, soothing, relaxing, dependable

Purple - physical and mental healing, spiritual
awareness, calming to mind and nerves

White - trust, integrity, purity, mental clarity, fresh
beginnings

The following steps will guide you through a simple yet powerful process where creativity and color will uplift your spirits to help you beat the winter blues.

Decide on a space or spaces where you will create your colorful flower garden. It is best to choose a place where you spend the greatest amount of time so that you can see it often. A window sill, the coffee table, your nightstand, your office cubicle are all examples of places that could use some cheering up.

Gather vintage and antique cups, vases pots, glass jars, glass medicine bottles, wine and liquor bottles etc. You may already have these in your home if you are a collector. Otherwise you can find these at second hand and antique stores to start your own collection. Gather as many as you need to fill the space(s) you have chosen. Look for unique shapes not commonly used today, although recreated items can look like vintage items so familiarize yourself with specific characteristics of genuine antiques. Thick glass bottles with raised lettering, vintage labels, lids attached with metal or wire are good too. Look for old milk bottles and bottles that have irregular seams helping to determine if they were hand blown or machine made.

Decide which of the items you will decorate. Even if you think that you have no artistic ability, it is crucial to healing your mood that you engage in this process. This is an important step!

The American Art Therapy Association states that “...the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight”.

Use craft paints on non-valuable glass like newer vases or drinking glasses. Measure and cut to fit white paper around the more expensive and collectible jars, bottles and cups. Use markers, paints or colored pencils to decorate the paper then secure them into place with tape. Use uplifting images printed from the computer or cut from magazines and glue or decoupage them to the various surfaces. Leave some bottles in their natural state to ad a shabby-chic look and display your collection of beautiful pieces.

Figure out about how many Flowers you will need to fill your vases. Buy your flowers keeping in mind the height and width of the containers you have. Choose flowers that make you feel happy, comforted and joyful. Try to get a good variety of types and colors even if this means going to a few different places.

Fill your containers with water and arrange them in your space(s). Take your time choosing which flowers will go into which of your artistic vases. Use height and color to create a space that you find most appealing. Group some flowers together in containers and use single flowers in bottles with smaller openings. Create another look by using a bit of food coloring in the water with clear glass.

Study the vibrant colors, fragrant smells, and intricate details of the flowers. Smile while you admire your creativity in your artwork and arrangement. Feel pleased that you have a wonderful collection of versatile and functional glass pieces.
Smile a big grin using your facial muscles. Breathe a few deep breaths and assure yourself that Spring is coming soon! Repeat this step often throughout the day.

TIPS
•Use empowering words and statements in your decorating to lift your mood such as “Spring is Coming Soon”, “Happiness”, “Attitude is Everything!”.
•You could buy some flowers that are already potted or that you can transplant to soil in your own vintage pots and change out the others as needed.
•If you are a parent in need of some healing, make time to do this project alone.
•Like adults, children and teens can suffer from these feelings, so this is a great activity to do with them or to let them do alone so that they can find some reprieve from cabin fever as well. Don’t let them use your collectibles!
•Once the weather warms up you can go to estate sales and expand your vintage glass collection! Keep this in mind to cheer you up with something fun to look forward to.
