3D DVDs with 3D Glasses: Will Your Family Enjoy the Home 3D Movie Viewing Experience?

By: Bob Johnson

Advances in 3D movie tech have created a boom in new 3D movies, especially family movies. subsequent 3D DVDs with included 3D Glasses are hitting the shelves Sporting a pair of red/blue glasses is extremely annoying after seeing the phenomenal 3D effects in crystal clear color at the theater. The biggest shock may be to kids who haven't known anything other than present-day theater 3D. The home set-up is much too familiar to any of us who can recall watching Jaws in 3D.

Watching 3D films at home is troublesome since the red/blue lenses of the 3D glasses diminish the hues in the film that's playing. Movies seem dark and details can be hard to make out. You will still notice that the resolution is still not as great in Blu-Ray on an HDTV, but it's definitely an improvement. Also, the quality of 3D effects seen in theaters simply cannot be duplicated by any other 3D technology. Occasionally, there might be a double vision effect where items don't jump out of the screen correctly. There are better 3D Glasses available as aftermarket items that really enhance the experience.

Ways to make your 3D Home Movie Experience Better
It is really worth the effort to try to watch a 3D movie in your own home? Isn't my cup of tea. The glasses made my head ache and the minimized color scheme wrecked the film. 3D maybe just a novelty but special affects are stellar. Fortunately, all of the more recent 3D movie releases also include the 2D version, so you've got nothing to lose! Also, there are a couple things you could do to enhance your personal 3D experience.

View 3D movies in high-definition: If you are able, buy the Blu-ray release of 3D movies and view them on a High Definition Television. The color and resolution look significantly better. However, if you watch a regular 3D DVD on a large HDTV, the quality will be greatly diminished due to the poor resolution of the DVD format.

Increase the brightness setting on your TV: Due to the red/blue lenses in 3D glasses, a properly configured TV image will appear too dark. Increasing the brightness will compensate for the muted color...slightly.

Watch 3D movies in the dark: Less ambient light in the room reduces the double-vision or halo effects and increases the perceived brightness.

Sit a little closer to the TV and directly in front of the TV: Obviously, the stereoscopic images will come across better if you look at the TV head-on. The 3D effects seem to improve if one sits a little closer, also.
Being able to view the movie in 3D was what made Journey to the Center of the Earth such fun - but wouldn't it be great to enjoy 3D movies right in your own home theater with 3D Glasses? Are the glasses more of a pain that they're worth? Are the effects as good-looking with home viewing as they appeared at the cinema? As the sheer volume of 3 dimensional theatrical releases increases these questions will be ever more present on consumers minds.

Journey to the Center of the Earth is a family thrill ride through the precarious center of the earth, where man-eating creatures and dangerous terrain threaten the lives of teenager Sean, his uncle Trevor, and their mountain guide, Hannah. Without the 3D effects, the movie would have been OK at best, but 3D dinosaurs and carnivorous plants jumping out of the screen made the theater experience worth it. From home, though, the 3D effects might sacrifice a bit of the movie picture quality. Colors aren't as bright, and portions of the film might not have the greatest resolution. You can purchase a better set of 3D Glases made for watching this movie that will produce a sharper image, than the stock ones that come with the movie.

This film is simply far superior in 3D even though the DVD features both the 3D and the regular versions of the movie with the 3D glasses. (assuming you can deal with the 3D glasses and that the movie works well with your particular home theater setup). One tip for getting the best picture quality for a 3D movie at home: watch it in Blu-ray if you can, especially if you have a large TV, as the resolution will not look as good with just a regular DVD. we'll explore further tips for getting the best possible quality, so that the family can hopefully enjoy the movie at home just as much as they did in the theater.
